ZAMBIA: Day trip to Livingstone
Posted: Dec 25th, 2006 at 6:44 am by chilumba
A trip to Zambia would not have been complete for Nelly if she went all the way there, and never saw the Victoria Falls in Livingstone, Zambia. So we decided to squeeze that day trip into our program. It turned out to be worthwhile and I enjoyed driving both ways.
In the past, I have had only been to Livingstone by plane, so it was an experience for me too to drive there and see all the small towns and villages along the way.
We left early Saturday morning, and came back late Sunday afternoon.
From my parents house in Kalundu, Lusaka:
START: ~ 7:00 AM
0 KM – Start trip
47 KM – Arrive in Kafue town
60 KM – Cross the Kafue River
130 KM – Mazabuka town
188 KM – Monze town
285 KM – Choma town
347 KM – Kalomo town
397 KM – Zimba town
469 KM – Finally arrive in LivingstoneEND: ~ 1:00 PM
The road is pretty decent all the way until midway into Zimba (just before reaching Livingstone). At that point, the road becomes bumpy, though without too many potholes. Lusaka Livingstone can be done at a speed of 120 KM per hour without a problem. But I would be careful as there are some impatient bus drivers on the road.

PS
NEVER RENT FROM HERTZ!!!
Hertz Zambia was a disappointment. They will give you a car you will literally have to push to get started; The car started fine at the pick up site, but on the trip, we had to push it a few too many times to get it started. What was further frustrating was the fact that the Hertz Zambia people also gave us wrong emergency numbers, and a phone number for someone who never picked up the phone. When dropping off the car, the owner/manager of the car rental simply dismissed us and whisked us away so that he could rent another car to someone else. He also claimed he does not have any business cards. WOW.I am an AVIS prefered member, but HERTZ had a bigger car available when renting. Maybe things would have been different with AVIS.
