ENGLAND: Day 1 (7/15)

Arrived at London Gatwick about 45 minutes early (yeahh).
Took almost 2 hours to clear immigration – long lines at passport control (booo).
Immigration/passport control guy was so rude and unsmiling – it was almost a mean ‘Welcome to England’ scenario. We cleared through the guy in less than 5 minutes, though he found it weird that we did not know the exact wording of the name of the degree program Ndalela was graduating out-of. He immediately asked me to pull out an original E-Ticket from the airline so that Nelly and I could prove to him that we will be heading back to the US within a few days. He didn’t immediately like the itinerary I had cleanly printed out in a word document and hence requested for one from the airline website – which we had
Amazing how many people got pulled out-of-line into immigration custody. I am guessing this happens every hour and everyday. Maybe that is the reason our passport control guy was mean.
We found Ndalela and Buka patiently waiting outside for us – I wonder how long they had to wait?
The London trip began – driving on the right side of the road…a lot of hunch-backs..narrow roads…not too many SUVs (Nelly must be sad to see so many smaller cars)
Arrived at the house and meet up with Aunt Mary and Mubanga.
Not jet-lagged yet. We managed to pull in a trip to Harrods – and got reintroduced to British prices.
Lessons for the day –
- Ndalela, Mubanga, and Nelly love donuts, and candy.
- Ndalela loves sweets, and shakes.
- Buka loves to work on the weekend ![]()
- Carry as much documentation as possible before approaching a British passport control office
